Time for a Quilting Vacation?

A quilting vacation has got to be the ultimate dream get-away. In October 2008, a friend and I planned our own vacation and travelled to the International Quilt Festival in Houston, Texas. Not only was it a great way to unwind and escape from day-to-day stress, it was exciting to connect with other like-minded people and see some of the greatest works in the world. The football field size shopping area also did wonders for our motivation. We viewed all the latest paraphanalia, new fabrics, new methods and visited with friendly designers. My friend and I also did a lot of exploring around Houston with an interesting tour of NASA's Johnson Space Center and a quiet afternoon at the Museum of Fine Arts.

Below you will find helpful information about vacations you can take on your own or with a friend (or friends!!).

Quilting Cruises

This kind of quilting vacation can be a great way to have quilt time and relaxation time combined. Cruise ships provide you with your own room, plenty of tasty food choices, nightly entertainment, exercise programs and tours of ports that you visit. Most quilt cruises offer fabulous opportunities to take workshops from top designers and quilters.

Quilt Shows

As I mentioned earlier, my quilting vacation to the Houston International Quilt Show was a motivating experience and wonderful escape. Plan to go alone, or take along some quilting buddies, whichever you need to enjoy yourself the most.

Quilting Retreats

Retreats are often offered locally through quilt stores, guilds, groups or clubs. They usually involve travelling to a relaxing location to spend time working on your own quilt projects or group projects.

If you have several friends that would like to spend time together quilting, you can also take time to arrange your own small group "retreat" at a favourite Inn, B & B or Guest Ranch. Many facilities welcome small or large groups and accommodate your needs happily.

Quilt Camp is just like summer camp... only better! Quilt camps are held in lovely locations with a room to yourself (or shared with a friend), a bed of your own and meals prepared by an excellent cook or chef. You can sign up for courses offered, learn new skills, and dedicate yourself to your passion. Meet new friends or take along the friends you already enjoy!
